OCEAN
STEWARDS

The Ocean Stewards Project:
The Ocean Stewards Project is a capacity-building program created by WILDOCEANS that supports postgraduate students and early-career professionals in marine conservation and research. Through practical fieldwork, structured training, and ongoing mentorship, the program helps young scientists and conservationists develop the skills, confidence, and leadership needed to drive impactful ocean conservation and governance.
Since its launch in 2015, the project has grown into a strong and connected community of over 160 young ocean professionals who are actively contributing to marine conservation, community engagement, and science-policy advocacy across South Africa and beyond.
The Ocean Stewards Annual Science Session:
The Science Sessions are an annual knowledge-sharing event designed to inspire and equip the next generation of marine scientists and conservation leaders. These sessions expose Ocean Stewards to the latest marine science and conservation topics while creating opportunities for meaningful dialogue between students, researchers, NGOs, and government representatives.
Through presentations, discussions, and networking opportunities, participants gain valuable insights into the challenges and innovations shaping ocean conservation today. The Science Sessions aim to foster collaboration, encourage mentorship, and strengthen connections between academic research and real-world conservation impact.
Annual Dinner on the Dock:
The Dinner on the Dock is a special celebratory evening held on the dock, bringing together Ocean Stewards, mentors, and partners to welcome the new cohort each year. The event celebrates the achievement of becoming an Ocean Steward and honours the collective successes of the program and its participants.
Surrounded by the ocean, guests share stories, build networks, and reflect on the impact of the project. The evening creates a meaningful space to connect, celebrate, and inspire continued commitment to protecting South Africa’s marine heritage.
